Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1
Editors' rating
Good
6.0
out of 10
- The good: Includes more than 300 security and performance patches in one installation; has easy deployment instructions for network installations; adds Java Virtual Machine; comes with an uninstall option.
- The bad: Huge download and installation footprint; not all features, including application-default control panel, work as well as expected; doesn't noticeably speed up Windows XP.
- The bottom line: Windows XP's first service pack is a worthwhile download--if only for the security patches--as long as you have the bandwidth. If not, you're better off piecing together XP fixes in smaller, single downloads.
