Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1

Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1

Editors' rating

Good

6.0

out of 10
  • The good: Includes more than 300 security and performance patches in one installation; has easy deployment instructions for network installations; adds Java Virtual Machine; comes with an uninstall option.
  • The bad: Huge download and installation footprint; not all features, including application-default control panel, work as well as expected; doesn't noticeably speed up Windows XP.
  • The bottom line: Windows XP's first service pack is a worthwhile download--if only for the security patches--as long as you have the bandwidth. If not, you're better off piecing together XP fixes in smaller, single downloads.

The much-vaunted Windows XP Service Pack 1 default-program control panel purports to let you easily change your media player, browser, e-mail, and instant-message software defaults. And you get a prize if you can spot any non-Microsoft apps in this collection of programs on our hard drive: XP couldn't locate six such apps on one of our test machines.
