Take more data with you on your PDA

If you're anything like me, you like to try out new software on a regular basis. You also like to (or have to) work on large documents. But if you try to do either on your PDA, it's all too easy to use up its precious storage space.

The best way I've found to save space on my PDA is to compress folders and files with a good Zip utility (just like I do on my PC). That way, I can take all of my spreadsheets and applications with me, in manageably sized packages. When I need to open a particular file, I just choose the one I want to work with and unzip it.

Here are three downloads for Palm and Pocket PC that'll help you make the most of your handheld's carrying capacity.

LightNzip zip and unzips files, so I have more more space on my Palm. Plus, it recognizes files that I compress using WinZip on my PC. Even if I just want to move a file from my home computer to my work machine, this is a great way to do it. (Shareware/Palm)

FlyZip XR virtually doubles the amount of data you can store on your Palm. Another bonus: It lets you compress a file, move it to a memory card, and then launch the file from the card. (Shareware/Palm)

IA Zip is a straightforward compression program that lets you view and manage Zip files on your Pocket PC. This one works with just about any Windows Zip utilities you might use on your desktop system. (Free/Pocket PC)
