| My favorite map software for handhelds |

On a recent trip to Minnesota to visit my parents, I borrowed their car and explored the snow-covered Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul). While I have a pretty good sense of direction, I'm not entirely familiar with the area's highway system and surface streets. So, the night before, I prepared for my drive by downloading some map software for my Palm.
Map software lets you view local streets and highways (and plot your course) right on your handheld. While the apps below don't include maps for every city, you will find info for most major ones. These programs are useful whether you're on vacation or traveling for business. Two even offer information about points of interest, restaurants, and hotels in the city you're traveling. The three apps listed below don't allow you to see all the city maps until you buy the program, but before you pay you will be able to get an idea of how the software works with a sample city map. Quo Vadis for Palm (PC) lets you look at color or grayscale maps of selected cities and offers info about local points of interest and landmarks. It also supports many GPS receivers. If you have one, you can see where you are in real time.(Shareware/Palm) The Lonely Planet CitySync Collection provides maps of major cities around the world as well as lots of details for vacationers. Along with street maps, these programs give you the lowdown on places to eat, hotels, and landmarks. (Shareware/Palm) Mapopolis for both Palm and Pocket PC is the one I used for touring the Twin Cities. It shows you detailed street maps and generates driving directions once you pick a destination.
