I use my Palm to store all sorts of information, including addresses, phone numbers, passwords, and account numbers. Clearly, I don't want this information to get into the wrong hands. This is even more of a problem with PDAs than with PCs, simply because PDAs are so easy for someone to pick up and carry off.
How do I protect my data? I use software that locks my Palm so only I can access it. This type of program requires you either to hit a sequence of buttons or to type in a password in order to access your data. Here are my three favorite programs for keeping my PDA safe from prying eyes. OnlyMe lets you set a password on your Palm device so no one else can access your data. You can set key combinations, stylus motions, or both as your password to unlock your Palm. (Shareware/Palm) EasyLock allows you to use the buttons on your Palm to unlock it, rather than requiring a password. For example, you can set a combination of pressing the left, down, and right buttons to get your PDA working. (Shareware/Palm OS) LockTheMatrix requires you to hit a predefined sequence of buttons on your Pocket PC to gain access to your data. This one can also be set to display the falling code from The Matrix movies when you turn it on. (Shareware/Pocket PC) If you want to stop people from snooping on your private data, download one of these apps.
