How to make Winamp even better

Winamp is one of my favorite MP3 players of all time. Though I've used other players in the past, I've always ended up coming back to Winamp for its ease of use and its virtually endless supply of skins to change the program's look and feel.

But Winamp isn't perfect. While the program works fine on its own, you can get a lot more out of it with some small downloads. To give Winamp the extra oomph it needs, here are three of my favorite plug-ins to improve its interface and sound quality.

DFX for Winamp turns your PC into a high-fidelity stereo system by simulating surround sound. While no program can make two computer speakers truly sound like four, the DFX enhancements let you optimize Winamp's sound quality. (Shareware/Windows)

eJukebox is a music-management program that, among other features, will monitor what you listen to and create playlists based on your favorites. This program works great when you just want to listen to a collection of songs you know you'll like without having to pick them out. (Shareware/Windows)

FlexTouch is a keyboard-shortcut utility that lets you quickly change songs, adjust volume, and more without having to access the Winamp interface. Use this one when you're busy on a project and just want to make a quick adjustment, switch songs, or change playlists on the fly. (Shareware/Windows)
