How to keep up with March Madness on your PC

If you follow sports, you know that--for better or worse--March Madness is upon us. It's the time of year when college basketball teams from around the country vie to find out who's best. The schools, the traditions, and the rabid fans all add to the mystique surrounding the tournament. I know that I, for one, can't wait to find out who makes the Final Four.

A lot of people get in on the action by organizing pools with coworkers or friends to bet on who'll come out on top. Of course, I'd never condone betting actual money; we play for who buys lunch at the office.

Whatever the stakes, organizing a pool can be tricky. Fortunately, you don't have to rely on poorly drawn grids or thrown-together spreadsheets. Plenty of great software is designed for this very purpose. You can set up the entire pool, add participants, check stats, view graphs, and post the whole thing on the Web so that everyone can see their standings--all with one program.

Here are three of my early favorites.

Leapy's Pool Master 2004 helps get your office pool up and running quickly, offering stats and reports to track each week's games. It can also automatically generate a Web page for easy access for all participants. (Shareware/Windows)

Turbo Tourney 2004 offers more features than Leapy's Pool Master 2004, but it comes at a price. If you want a comprehensive pool manager and are willing to pay the money, this is the one to download. (Shareware/Windows)

OfficePool 2004 for Mac OS X is also a comprehensive pool manager. It offers handy features such as being able to e-mail all participants' info to them with the click of a mouse, along with different Web templates and numerous scoring options. You'll need to register to modify the teams in this version. (Shareware/Mac)
