Every Friday, I write about programs that fit AnchorDesks's home and entertainment theme. I usually recommend two or three programs for Windows and one or (sometimes) none for Macs. But since the Mac has become such a great platform for home entertainment, especially digital audio, today I'm going to tell you about some great music-related software for Mac that I've come across recently.

Everyone knows (or should know) about iTunes. It comes preloaded on Macs, and there's even a Windows version of this popular music software. But there are other options out there, too. For a change of pace, here are some of my favorite Mac apps for playing (and playing with) your MP3s.

Mint Audio uses up less desktop real estate than iTunes because it lives on the side of your screen, like the Control Strip. In addition to playing your MP3s, this app offers cross-fading of tracks, a 10-band equalizer, and even a mini-visualizer. (Shareware/Mac)

RadioLover is a top-notch streaming music program that lets you select your favorite streams and rip the songs into separate MP3 files. You can even set RadioLover to record during your favorite streaming radio shows. When you're done, just import the resulting files into iTunes like any other MP3s, and you'll have hours of new music to listen to. (Free/Mac)

ArKaos Visualizer, a plug-in that works on both iTunes and Audion, gives you the ability to create a laser light show--well, swirling video effects, anyway--that "dance" with your music on your Mac desktop. This download offers several free preloaded visualizations to help you get started. (Free/Mac)
