Every year, I end up with a bunch of new CDs after the holidays. Some are gifts, others I can't help but pick up for myself when I'm out shopping for others. I'm not complaining--I love music.

One of first things I do with any new disc is burn a mix CD of my favorite tracks. To make these mixes more memorable, whether they're for friends or myself, I believe the label is almost as important as the music. It won't do to just scribble a name on the CD with a Sharpie. Instead I use downloadable software to create slick-looking labels and jewel cases. My favorites let you choose from premade designs, or incorporate your own graphics. Here they are.

Acoustica CD Label Maker lets you choose from a ton of preset designs, import your own images, and add song lists so you know exactly what's on every CD. (Shareware/Windows)

SureThing CD Labeler offers tons of professional-looking designs for your labels and jewel cases. It also has support for labeling other media types, such as Zip and Jazz disks. (Shareware/Windows)

Click'N Design 3D for Mac OS X features 3D text and texture mapping, circular text that you can resize on the fly, and tons of premade designs. (Shareware/Mac)
