Summer's here, and that means it's time to fire up the barbeque and grill up some backyard cuisine. I dabble in the culinary arts myself, with a concentration in outdoor grilling. I've used several techniques for barbecuing and know some pretty good recipes.

Which brings me to today's software category: recipe database apps. These programs organize your favorite recipes--from grilled tri-tip to lemon meringue pie--and make them easy to search for and print out later. They also let you search for new recipes on other people's computers.

That means no more boxes of messy index cards or barbeque sauce-covered books! I say: Good riddance.

RecipEase lets you organize your recipes into categories, and add pictures, itemized ingredient lists, and nutritional information. You can then see at a glance how many people a recipe serves, its preparation time, and more. (Shareware/Windows)

ERMster lets you search other people's recipe databases for just what you want. Once you connect to the ERMster Network, your menu options are virtually limitless. (Free/Windows)

Computer Cuisine Deluxe for both Windows and Mac includes more than 1,000 recipes to get you started. This one is my favorite for its overall look--the graphical interface makes it feel like you're flipping through a real cookbook--and the ease with which you can browse for new recipes. (Shareware/Windows/Mac)

Whether you're an established grill master (like I wish I was) or if you just want to start keeping track of your greatest dishes, these programs can help.
