Recently, I took a trip to Portland, Oregon, for a weekend vacation and brought along my trusty digital camera. Portland is a very picturesque city, offering gorgeous views of bridges, a quaint city skyline, and more trees than you know what to do with. Needless to say, I got some great shots.

When I got home to California, I wanted to share my shots with my family in Minnesota. But rather than posting my photos to the Web or spending time reformatting them in an image editor for e-mailing, I decided to try out some photo-sharing apps.

This type of software sometimes requires that both parties (those creating and viewing the photos) download the app. But once that's out of the way, sharing photos is quick and easy. Here are my three favorites.

InstaPix uses peer-to-peer technology to help you share photos with friends and family. Once you and the person you're sharing with are signed on to this online service, you can drag-and-drop to trade photos and even chat with each other about selected shots. A Mac OS X version should be available soon. (Free/Windows)

PhotoLinx lets you connect and share pictures with others using the PhotoLinx software. This one offers a synchronize feature, so the people you're sharing with can transfer just the photos they haven't seen from the selected host to their computers. (Shareware/Windows)

Photo Vibe is slightly different than the other two, but just as easy to use. With this one, you make your computer the Web server, so you need only send a link to your friends for them to view your shots in any browser. (Shareware/Windows)

Clearly, there are many ways to share photos with your friends and family. But I was surprised to find how convenient these apps were. Try them--you'll see.

How do you share photos? Know of any other good file-sharing software? TalkBack to me!
