With summer upon us and temperatures rising, everyone's heading outdoors on the weekends or planning vacations. This, of course, means checking the weather a lot to make sure your plans go smoothly.

Like most people, I try to catch the weather forecasts on TV and radio. But there's another, even more convenient tool I use as well: desktop weather software.

You can check these apps anytime of the day or night--and get a lot more info than you do from broadcasts. They're simple to use: Just boot up the software, punch in your zip code, and you'll see all the meteorological data you need, including short and long-term forecasts, satellite photos, and severe weather warnings.

Here are my three favorites for keeping up with the weather.

Weather1 sits in your system tray until you want to check the forecast from any of 5,500 locations. With this app, you can access radar images, multiple-day forecasts, and local weather service info with the click of your mouse. (Free/Windows)

Weather Watcher is the one I use most often. It offers up weather for anywhere in the world, and its interface is very easy to use, with icons for location, extended forecasts, and more. (Free/Windows)

WeatherManX for Mac OS X gives you the forecast for your area. Plus, it offers quick access to severe weather alerts, radar pictures, and other meteorological info using a tabbed interface. (Shareware/Mac)

Whether you're making sure your weekend plans aren't ruined, or just want to know whether or not to bring that umbrella to work, try these apps. It's like having your own private weather bureau in your computer.

Know of any other good weather-related software? How do you keep up on the weather? TalkBack to me!
