3 easy ways to save what's on your screen

Every so often while surfing the Web, I run across an interesting Web page or a funny image that I want to keep on my computer or send to a friend. What do I do? I could send a URL, but, as I've learned the hard way, URLs expire. Instead, I capture and save what's on my screen on my hard drive as a graphics file.

While Windows can capture screens itself, the built-in tool isn't very flexible. For example, it doesn't allow me to grab an entire Web page or a selected area of the screen. Also, once I have the image, I like to be able to clean it up or otherwise manipulate it without having to open a separate image-editing program.

That's where image-capture applications come in. They offer a lot more features than the Print Screen option in Windows, and usually let you edit the image right in the program. Once you get used to working with one of these apps, I assure you, you'll never go back.

Here are three of my favorites.

SnagIt, an old favorite of mine for screen capture and editing, just received a major update. My favorite feature of this app is its ability to capture all of the content on an entire scrollable Web page. (Shareware/Windows)

Screen Print & Capture 32 lets you capture all or any part of your computer desktop or an active application window. You can also customize headers and footers for your captured images, and convert color images to grayscales. (Shareware/Windows)

1ClickPicGrabber takes a different approach by integrating with Internet Explorer to allow you to capture interesting images and movies on the fly. This one grabs all the images, Zip files, or movies on a particular page with one click. (Shareware/Windows)

Whether you need to save images, movies, or entire sites, use one of these programs to get what you  want from the Web.
