When I'm away from my computer, I carry my trusty Palm handheld to stay in touch with the digital world. But I also use it to take care of some nitty-gritty details in the here-and-now.

For example, some of my favorite apps for my Palm are programs that help me track my car's maintenance needs. I'm a firm believer in checking my gas mileage, sticking to the maintenance schedule, and getting my car's oil changed regularly. After all, a car is a huge investment, and I want mine to last. With a handheld, you can do all of this on the fly without having to write everything down, maintain cumbersome files, or rely on those stickers the mechanics put on your windshield. You just punch in the relevant numbers and dates, and the software does the rest.

Here are three apps that will get you on the road to keeping your car in top shape.

MyCar helps you keep track of gas mileage, maintenance, and insurance details wherever you are. It also reminds you about other things, such as when you need to reregister your vehicle (in case you missed the DMV's notice.) (Free/Palm OS)

MrCar focuses on all expenses involving your car. Not only can you track gas mileage and maintenance, the software also tracks business trips, parking expenses, and insurance. MrCar lets you organize the info in all sorts of useful ways. (Shareware/Palm OS)

Ultimate Car tracks every expense and scheduled service for your car. Tire changes, oil changes, and gas mileage history are all easily accessible at the tap of your stylus. You can also sort by a number of different criteria to find the data you want quickly. (Shareware/Palm OS)

What do you think? How do you keep track of your car's maintenance schedule? What are your favorite handheld apps? TalkBack to me below!
