Back in college I spent a lot of time doing research, which meant putting in many hours at the library and taking a lot of notes.

The Internet certainly hasn't made libraries obsolete, but it has made research a whole lot easier, especially when you're using the right tools. Research software can help you index and organize your information effectively, so you can quickly cull the best material from thousands of pages of data.

Here are three programs I like to use to help me organize and sift through the notes and sources I collect.

KeyNote has a tabbed interface that lets you organize your notes, so you can find information quickly. It also offers a tree view that shows you all of your compiled info at a glance. (Shareware/Windows)

ActionOutline lets you store and organize information using a Windows Explorer-like interface. I figured this one out in just a few minutes and was able to store bookmarks, article notes, contacts, and just about everything I need on a daily basis. (Shareware/Windows)

Scribe helps you organize notes and sources for papers and projects and lets you cross-index information for quick retrieval. A historian designed this app, so you can rest assured that the quality is of the highest level. (Shareware/Mac)

Research can be a nightmare if you can't find all of your information. Use these programs to help clean up the note-taking mess and keep your projects organized and on track.
