A couple weeks ago, I recommended three downloads that let you change your GUI (graphical user interface) with skins, giving your desktop a whole new look and feel.

While those kinds of programs are great, the changes they make can be pretty dramatic. If you want some more subtle ways to personalize your GUI, I've found a slew of downloads that let you tweak your icons, customize your cursor, or make your startup and shutdown screens your own.

Here are three of my favorites.

Axialis IconWorkshop makes it possible to create, extract, convert, manage, and redistribute Windows icons. It supports Windows XP icons and features both smooth edges and shadows. (Shareware/Windows)

ArtIn WinLogo lets you display any image you want while the operating system boots up and shuts down. Just set any JPEG or BMP image as the startup or shutdown screen for your version of Windows, and you're in business. (Shareware/Windows)

Kineticon for the Mac Classic OS allows you to replace your icons with cool-looking animated ones called "kines," which you can choose to activate or shut off at any time. (Free/Mac)

You don't need to give your desktop a complete overhaul to make it your own. Sometimes it's the small changes that make all the difference.

Care to recommend any other programs for customizing your desktop? What do you think of these? TalkBack to me!
