Toshiba's new Pocket PC: Beautiful inside and out

We've always heard that beauty is only skin deep, and it's what's inside  that really matters. Well, Toshiba seems to have addressed both appearance and soul with its new Pocket PC e740.

The e740 is Toshiba's first handheld to include Intel's new XScale processor, and it also incorporates WiFi (802.11b) connectivity. The new chip allows the e740 to run at speeds up to 400MHz, and Intel says it consumes the same amount of power as the 206MHz StrongARM chip found in former Pocket PCs. The primary benefit of the XScale processor is enhanced battery life, but in reality, none of the software we've seen has yet been optimized for it.

Similarly, the e740's new ATI Imageon 100 2D video chip is designed to deliver improved graphics, better overall system performance, and longer battery life. But once again, the software isn't there to take advantage of it just yet. The built-in WiFi connectivity, on the other hand, yields immediate benefits.

We were also happy to see both SD and CompactFlash Type II expansion slots. Toshiba is also offering a $100 expansion pack geared toward business users. It provides the ability to add USB devices (including keyboards), and a VGA output for connecting to an external monitor or a projector.
