So how many unwanted e-mails about get-rich-quick schemes and genital enhancement do you need to receive before you take the plunge and get yourself a spam filter? Well, the ZDNet Reviews team recently looked at a pair of programs that will help you monitor your mailbox.

Of course, if you get only a few spams a day, it's probably easier to just hit the delete button. But if you're simply flooded, or if hitting the delete key is causing you to do a slow burn, our top choice is the aptly-named SpamKiller. Originally developed by Novasoft, this 5-year-old app was recently purchased by McAfee.com, which quickly made the program more stable.

Our runner-up is SpamCop. It also performed solidly in our tests, though it requires a bit of tech know-how to get up and running. In our tests, SpamKiller let through slightly more spam than SpamCop; on the plus side, it also flagged fewer legitimate e-mails as spam. Ultimately, nothing's going to be perfect, but the smarter you are in setting up your filters, the better off you'll be.
