Pioneer vs. HP: Battle of the recordable DVD drives

In this corner is the Pioneer DVR-A04, the latest version of the DVD-R and DVD-RW drive that won the first round of our fight. Its predecessor, the DVR-A03, was one of the first affordable (aka sub-$1,000) DVD-R drives around, and quickly became one of the top-selling DVD-recordable drives because it was included with many Apple and Compaq Presario PCs.

To date, its chief appeal has been the widespread compatibility of DVD-R discs with existing DVD drives and players. That could be changing though, now that DVD+RW drives are starting to add support for the write-once DVD+R format, which should provide better compatibility.

In the opposite corner is our challenger: HP's new DVD-Writer DVD200i. HP was the first company to release a DVD+RW drive late last year, and this follow-on now supports DVD+R. The DVD200i is faster than the Pioneer drive, DVD+R media is now widely available and competitively priced, and discs should be compatible with a wide range of drives and players.

Let round two begin.
