Weekend Webmasters and full-time pros, take note: A new version of Macromedia's Dreamweaver Web development tool is available--and it's got more power under the hood than any other app out there.

The Dreamweaver MX Preview Release won't work after June 7, so if you want to try it out, download it soon. While this preview is free, the retail edition of Dreamweaver comes with a hefty price tag. If you're looking for Web authoring tools that cost a little less, head to ZDNet Downloads. I've found three excellent programs that let you build great Web pages--without spending a dime.

1st Page 2000 is a longtime favorite of mine--and amazingly enough, it's free. This HTML editor offers an easy-to-use interface, a remarkable array of tools, 450 JavaScripts, 15 DHTML scripts, and a lot more. (Free/Windows)

CoffeeCup Free HTML is a solid HTML editor that's particularly well-suited for those with little HTML experience. It offers ready-made templates, pre-built DHTML, and wizards for helping build pages. It also includes a host of more powerful features for advanced users, as well. (Free/Windows)

HTML Kit not only lets you create great Web pages, it also helps you improve your HTML code-writing skills. The program validates and analyzes all your code, then points out errors and suggests improvements. (Free/Windows)

Whatever your level of HTML expertise, check out these three freebies. They prove that you don't need to spend a dime to build great Web sites.
