For Windows users, hardware glitches, system slowdowns, and unexplained crashes are an unfortunate way of life. No matter how fast your computer and how big your hard disk, there's no escaping it.

But there's a lot you can do to try to solve those nagging problems before they begin. ZDNet Downloads is full of utilities that can help. Here are three of my favorites that'll do everything, from cleaning out your Windows Registry to making your system more stable and helping you recover from system crashes.

Registry Compressor cleans out all the unneeded junk in your Registry that slows down your computer and can lead to PC problems. It'll also let you back up and restore your Registry in the event of a crash. (Shareware/Win95-98-NT)

BugToaster monitors your system and software for crashes, and when something goes wrong, it captures all the appropriate information and sends it to a BugToaster Internet database, where it then gets sent along to the vendors. The database contains fixes that you can use to help make your system run more smoothly. (Free/Win95-98-NT)

TaskInfo 2000 monitors and displays all your computer's programs and processes, and gives you detailed information about each. It can terminate any process (including those that cause problems), and perform reboots, restarts, and shutdowns. TaskInfo also shows system-wide information such as CPU, memory, cache usage, and data-transfer rates for disk, network, and dial-up connections. (Shareware/Win95-98-NT)

So who cares that Windows is about as stable as a rope bridge in a hurricane? With these system tools, you'll be able to help stop system crashes.
