NAPSTER SAYS IT'S AN ISP
Internet file-swapping program Napster says it is just an Internet service provider (ISP), and therefore not liable for any music piracy on its site. Napster is in the midst of a legal battle with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The RIAA claims Napster is a haven for music piracy, and hurts record sales. Napster, which just added former Microsoft-buster David Boies to its legal team, says the RIAA is trying to stymie song swap technology to perpetuate its dominance of the $39 billion global music business. Oral arguments in the case are set for July 26.

MICROSOFT BULKS UP DEFENSE TEAM
Microsoft bolstered its legal team as it tries to get its antitrust case heard before the appeals court instead of being rushed to the Supreme Court, Associated Press reported. The Redmond giant hired Carter Phillips and his Washington, D.C. law firm of Sidley & Austin to assist lead counsel.

JAPAN MOBILE PHONE USERS GET NEWS
CNN formed an partnership with NTT DoCoMo Inc. to deliver Internet news and information direct to the Japanese mobile phone giant's customers. Users of i-Mode, DoCoMo's wildly popular high-speed mobile phone service, will have access to CNN news and information reports in English or Japanese. In a move away from free Internet services, the CNN delivery will cost nothing for headlines, but will charge a fee for the entire article.
