Weather in New England (where I live) is as unpredictable as a spin of the roulette wheel. As they say in these parts, if you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes--it'll change.

So New Englanders have become hard-core weather watchers. And they're not alone. Weather has become a national obsession. If you want help tracking storms and finding forecasts for your block or another continent, the best place to turn is ZDNet Downloads. Here are three great programs I've found for keeping an eye on the weather.

Weather1 is a comprehensive weather watcher that gives you forecasts, weather warnings and advisories, and access to satellite and radar images. You can even use it to check weather Webcams and see live weather across the country. (Shareware/Windows)

WeatherBug is great for getting local forecasts and storm warnings, as well as radar pictures, and links to weather and news sites. This program also offers pollen forecasts, UV Index forecasting, and beach and boating conditions. (Free/Windows)

Desktop Weather by The Weather Channel gives you immediate access to weather information from the 24-hour weather cable TV channel. It lets you check out the forecasts and conditions for 80,000 locations worldwide, as well as view a slide show of U.S. local and national weather maps. (Free/Windows)

If you love to track the weather, check out these programs. With them, you won't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.
