Intel released its new Pentium 4 chip, boasting speeds of 1.4 GHz and 1.5 GHz. The new chips will be relative bargains -- $644 and $819, respectively. Intel's 1 GHz Pentium III cost $990 when it debuted. But a higher clock speed does not automatically mean the P4 will be faster. The P4's high clock speeds come from its new "NetBurst" architecture, featuring a longer pipeline and advanced data caching. TIGHTER SECURITY IN WHISTLER
The upcoming Windows release known as "Whistler" will come with an assortment of new security options, including blocking software without a valid digital signature. Details were scarce about the new security plans. Windows 2000 currently recognizes "trusted applications," which use cryptographic certificates from Verisign. Win2K also includes an option to automatically warn or block installing unsigned drivers. Developers who want to have their drivers signed have to submit them to Microsoft for testing. This raises fears that Microsoft's new security plans could increase and extend the Redmond giant's power over Windows software developers. DOT-COMS DYING ONE A DAY
The tech wreck continues to rampage the Internet sector, with startups closing down at the rate of approximately one a day, according to a new Webmergers.com study. Throughout Europe and the U.S., 120 Net firms have died since the beginning of the year. In October alone, 21 bit the dust. And in November dot-com closures exceeded one a day with 21 in the first half of the month alone. Webmergers believes 8,000 jobs have been lost since the beginning of the year.
