CNET GLOSSARY: Terms for the techie
night vision system
Night vision systems help the driver see objects in the path of the vehicle that could not normally be seen at night or in adverse conditions. It is especially helpful for identifying pedestrians and animals crossing in front of the vehicle. Some systems also can display information about the roadway, such as the proximity of upcoming vehicles and changes in the road. The information is generally displayed in the driver's normal field of vision through a heads-up display (HUD) unit. In clear weather with HID headlamps, night vision is relatively useless. But in dense fog or driving rain, it's as handy as an aircraft's radar.
