CNET GLOSSARY: Terms for the techie
GPRS
General Packet Radio Service GPRS builds upon the existing GSM wireless communications standard by adding packet switching for Internet access via a GPRS-enabled mobile phone or a GPRS modem on a laptop. GPRS offers higher throughput than GSM's 9.6Kbps to 14.4Kbps--a theoretical maximum of 171Kbps, but in reality GPRS ranges from 28.8Kbps to 56Kbps. It is already being challenged by EDGE, a newer GSM-based technology that offers significantly faster throughput.
