This organization, no longer active, was responsible for registering and maintaining the .com, .net, and .org domain names on the World Wide Web. It began as a collaborative project between AT&T and Network Solutions (NSI), supported by the National Science Foundation, but it was disbanded, and its responsibilities were handed over to ICANN in 1999.
