A type of material that allows electrical current to flow through it under certain conditions, which makes it optimal for controlling the flow of current. Any number of chemical compounds can be used as semiconductors, but the most common is silicon. Semiconductors are used to create common electronic components, such as the transistors that make up computer microchips.
