buffer
Memory that serves as a data reservoir to avoid interruptions in the flow of data to a requesting device from a slower or possibly busier supplying device. For example, a CD-R burner uses an onboard buffer to make sure that it has enough data on hand to continue writing, even if your system becomes busy with other tasks.
