CNET GLOSSARY: Terms for the techie
browser sniffing
The process by which a Web site detects which browser, as well as which version of that browser, a user is running, in order to determine whether the user can access certain site features. Browser sniffing, usually accomplished with JavaScript, can also be used to detect whether a user has a specific plug-in required to access the site, such as Macromedia's Flash or Real Networks' RealPlayer.
