CNET GLOSSARY: Terms for the techie
Web hosting
A service in which an Internet service provider maintains Web server hardware and software, enabling its customers to concentrate on producing the content for their Web sites. Users store their content on the ISP's server. For instance, a large e-commerce site might have another company host its site so that it can devote its resources to designing and operating the business, partner, and customer aspects of the site. In addition, ISPs may provide individual customers with a small amount of space on the ISP's server for hosting their own Web sites.
